Citrus Heights is a warm, dry area of California surrounded by farms, mountains, and a rushing river. Everything that makes Citrus Heights a beautiful place to live also provides an ideal home to several species of spiders.
While most spiders are relatively harmless to humans, some venomous species pose a significant threat to your safety. Since there are several different types of spiders around, we figured it would be a good idea to provide you with some facts regarding the most common species found in this part of California. So, without further ado, let’s get into some spider facts!
Black Widow spiders vary in appearance based on their gender. Female spiders are more massive, usually shiny black in color, and almost always have an hourglass-shaped red marking on the underside of their abdomen. Males are smaller than females overall, are generally brown or grey with white markings on their abdomen, and have two large mandibles that look like bulging eyes protruding from the cephalothorax (head). (National Geographic)
Interesting Black Widow Fact:* *Contrary to popular belief, female Western Black Widows rarely kill and consume their mates. That behavior is most common in the Australian Red Back Spider (Latrodectus hasseltii). Male Western Black Widow spiders tend to have several mates throughout their lifespan (source).
Generally, Western Black Widow spiders are dry, dark, and secluded anywhere. They’re known to frequent old wood piles, the spaces underneath house siding, attics, crawlspaces, basements, subfloors, cabinets, and sheds. You’re more likely to find a web with an exoskeleton than see the actual animals. However, just because they’re sneaky doesn’t mean that they’re impossible to notice until it’s too late. Some common signs of a black widow infestation include:
Suppose you’ve found black widows anywhere on your property. In that case, it’s in your best interest to give our team of Citrus Heights spider exterminators a call right away. They’re the only genuinely worrisome species on our list, and you shouldn’t ever take their presence lightly.
Most of the fear associated with Wolf spiders is due entirely to their large size and frightening appearance. They can grow up to 35mm (about 1.5 inches) long, are generally grey and hairy, and have large fanged mandibles with an aggressive appearance. However, even though they appear frightening, wolf spiders are mostly harmless. They will occasionally bite, but only when threatened, and as we said earlier, they are entirely non-venomous (to humans).
The only real sign of a Wolf spider infestation is the spiders themselves. However, if you notice one, you most likely have several, and you should contact our team of Citrus Heights spider removal professionals right away.
Tarantulas are the largest spiders in the world. Just like any other species of spider, tarantulas have eight legs, eight eyes, two body sections (cephalothorax and abdomen), and are covered in hair. Tarantulas are burrowing spiders (make their homes in burrows in the ground) and prefer warmer, dryer climates. Most species are relatively harmless and rarely bite humans. However, almost all tarantula species have fiberglass-like hairs along their abdomen that they will “launch” at anything perceived as a threat. The strands are itchy and incredibly irritating but are otherwise harmless (unless you’re allergic).
Unless you live on a large property away from the city, you’re unlikely to come across any tarantulas. The only signs of an infestation are visible spiders, and, again, you’re unlikely to run across them here. However, if you do, then you can rest assured knowing we’re standing by to help you with spider removal in Citrus Heights.
Harvestmen are, contrary to popular belief, not spiders at all. While they are arachnids, they lack the two distinct body segments that separate spiders from other arachnids. Harvestmen belong to the Opilonnes family and are commonly referred to as Daddy Longlegs (a misnomer). They do not produce silk and are never found in webs of any kind (unless trapped by an actual spider). Harvestmen very, very rarely bite humans and are completely harmless.
Signs of a harvestman infestation include visible animals, and that’s it. If you have a harvestman infestation, then contact our team of Citrus Heights spider removal professionals for help. Yes, we’re aware they’re not spiders, but we can still give you a helping hand.
Cellar Spiders (Pholcidae) are the real Daddy Longlegs spider. They are often confused for Harvestmen due to their long legs that they detach when threatened. However, Cellar Spiders have a cephalothorax and abdomen, eight legs and meet all the other general qualifications for a real spider. They can bite humans but rarely do so. You’ll often find these spiders hanging out in cellars, basements, garages, and generally anywhere dark, damp, and away from regular human traffic. They spin enormous erratic webs that house several spiders at a time.
Signs of a cellar spider infestation include visible spiders, web networks, and cobwebs. If you find a cellar spider infestation at your home or business, then do not hesitate to contact an Citrus Heights spider exterminator from our team. Remember, if you’ve seen one spider, there are probably hundreds more you’re not seeing.
When it comes to spiders (and most other household pests), the sooner you contact an exterminator, the better off you’ll be. So, in light of that fact, if you have any kind of spider infestation (or another type of arachnid), then don’t hesitate to contact us here at Millennium Termite & Pest. Our team of Citrus Heights spider control professionals is always standing by to give you a helping hand!
